Here’s what St. Mary’s Boys Head Basketball Coach Kelvin Lee had to say about his team’s work this summer as he builds his Dragons program.
We have had a good summer. Practice has been good with emphasis on defense. The team is responding to the demands of the coaching staff better after the 1st year of adjusting to a new way of doing things. Veterans like Senior Zac Ortinau, Sophomores Tony Burkes & Yahuza Rasas are showing signs of leadership and providing that CORE that is necessary for any team.
Incoming freshman Yuri Collins is going to be one of the premier freshmen in the area. He is a point guard that has all the tools to be a good one. The ball will be in his hands to run the show. We will have to live with some mistakes early on but as the season goes on, he will get better. Sophomore Miles Jones has been a pleasant surprise this summer after a freshman year on the JV. He is a power forward.
We went down to SLUH Summer Shootout and won our pool play at 4-0 with wins over SLUH2, Cahokia, Soldan, and Hazelwood Central by 15 pts and they had all of their weapons including (Xavier) Sneed.
At KU Team Camp we went 8-1 for the weekend. We played teams from Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. We were in Small schools but I like the way we competed. Those teams really play hard and gave us different looks offensively and defensively. I’m looking forward to this season.
