There was no shortage of talent with local ties selected in this year’s Major League Baseball draft, which concluded Wednesday. Among those chosen was Morehead State 1B Kane Sweeney, a Belleville West graduate who was taken by the New York Yankees in the 29th Round with the 873rd overall selection.
Thank you to the @Yankees for me giving me this incredible opportunity to continue my baseball career! I couldn’t be more appreciative.

He admitted to “freaking out” when he first heard the news.
Here’s how Todd Baltz, Head Coach of the Belleville West Maroons baseball team reacted to the news. “The Maroon Baseball Family is very excited for Kane to fulfill his dream of playing professional baseball. He has always shown an incredible ability to work hard and was dedicated to improving as a player. Kane was a quality hitter in high school and continued that success at Morehead State, he has earned the opportunity to further his career and we could not be more proud of him. We would like to wish him the best of luck as he pursues his dream!!”
Thank you to everyone that has supported me and helped get me to this point in my life. So many people have played a huge role in this. — Kane Sweeney (@ksweeney17) June 11, 2015
