Holiday Hoops Primer Features Busy Slates For Top Teams

With the 2014-15 high school basketball season now in full swing, I thought it would be a good idea to get a look at the landscape of annual holiday tournaments. This year, that means a new-look for one of the area’s longest running events. The Meramec Holiday Tournament is now the Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Tournament, replacing the day-long series of games that were usually played at Scottrade Center in January under the Coaches vs. Cancer banner.

This year’s field in the event, which starts after Christmas, includes top-seeded Webster Groves, Confluence Prep, Jennings, St. Charles West, Vianney, Lafayette, Troy Buchanan, Parkway West, De Smet Jesuit, Hazelwood Central, Marquette, Kirkwood, Lindbergh, Springfield Kickapoo and Soldan.

The Statesmen will be fresh off their appearance in a prestigious national tournament, the City of Palms Classic, considered the top holiday tournament in the country, which tips off Thursday in Ft. Myers, Florida.

The Ft. Myers News-Press broke down the field, which includes Montverde (La) Academy, featuring LSU pledge Ben Simmons, one of the top players in the class of 2015. Missouri fans will also recognize Antonio Blakeney of Orlando Oak Ridge. Blakeney is back on the MU recruiting radar after re-opening his recruitment.
