Season Preview: 2014 Bishop DuBuorg Football

Here is a readout on the Cavs, courtesy of Assistant AD Ryan Sykora

2013-2014 Season AAA Large
Overall (3-7)
Conference (0-4)

The Cavaliers will return 95% of last year’s team to the field this season, graduating only four players. This fall Bishop DuBourg looks to the leadership of Stafford Green and Maurion Warren, senior running backs, who combined for more than 1,200 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns last season. The offensive line looks healthy, bringing back four of the five starters from last year. In combination, the offensive line weighs in at about 1,300 pounds. Beefing up this line will definitely keep the team in the mix with bigger teams such as Living Word Christian, De Soto, and Liberty-Wentzville.

Juniors Max Buck, quarterback, and Marcus King, flexback, are coming off the bench this season and should really help DB on the offensive front. Defensively, the Cavs will return All-Conference Defensive Lineman Ronnie Warren, sophomore, who was second in sacks for the conference with a total of eight. His twin brother Ryan Warren will continue his strong efforts at linebacker, and some new freshmen faces will give the team strong depth.

In the recent past, experience has been the team’s major obstacle. Two years ago, the Cavaliers started 15 freshmen on the varsity team. Last fall, sophomores and freshmen made up most of the team. Now that the Cavs are a bit more seasoned, confidence and momentum will be the biggest hurdles. Bishop DuBourg plays in a tough district with schools such as John Burroughs, McCluer South-Berkeley, and Normandy. DB players are working extra hard to get to the next level.

The season kicks off against Lutheran South which is always a tough game. A victory to start the season will go a long way to boost the players’ confidence and improve the team’s standing within its district. Coaches say the Cavs can beat every team on this season’s schedule, if players work together to reach their potential.
