The Vianney Golden Griffins got a taste of life in the Final Four last spring for the first time, but if Head Coach Kevin Walsh’s crew is to make a return trip to Mizzou Arena next March, he’ll need to do it without two key components of that squad. Brad Woodson and Sean O’Brien have moved on to the University of Central Missouri.
There is precedent for the team’s success out of seemingly uncertain circumstances. Take last season, as Woodson and O’ Brien took a team which lost almost the entire starting lineup from a unit that lost in the state quarterfinals in 2012, and got hot at the right time to fuel the Final Four squad in 2013.
As always, Vianney will face a tough Metro Catholic Conference slate against CBC, De Smet Jesuit, Chaminade and SLUH. Here’s a look at Kevin Walsh’s keys coming into the season.
2012-2013 Record: 22-10
Best Guess Starting Five: Tanner Cochran, JJ Mandina, Danny Baker, Jordon Hardwick, Kyle Markway
Key Reserves: Nick Miller, Nolan Snyder, Zach Colletta
Biggest hurdle: “Replacing two scorers who scored over 500 points last season and our young players gaining experience quickly.”
Key Stretch Of Your Schedule & Why: “The last two weeks of the season will prepare for us for a challenging district tournament. We want to be playing well at the end of the year.”
